Welcome

Dear IUMI colleagues,

It is a great honor for us that the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) will host the IUMI 2017 Tokyo Conference for the first time since 2006.

While this will be the 5th occasion for the conference to be held in Tokyo, the year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the GIAJ. Therefore, it is our great pleasure that the historic and distinguished IUMI Conference will be back in Tokyo on such a commemorative year for us, and we look forward to welcoming as many of our marine insurance colleagues from around the world as possible.

The history of general insurance in Japan goes back to the 19th century. Founded in 1878, the first general insurance company in Japan began to sell cargo insurance in 1879 and hull insurance in 1883. Therefore, one of the reasons we warmly welcome the IUMI Conference is that, historically speaking, marine insurance is the origin of the general insurance industry in Japan.

The main venue of the IUMI 2017 Tokyo Conference will be "Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba", which is located in the Daiba area of Tokyo. Known for its beautiful scenery backdropped against Tokyo Bay, Daiba is one of the most popular spots in Tokyo. Of course, the hotel has ample facilities to hold the IUMI Conference comfortably. We are certain that you will be satisfied with the venue, and will be able to enjoy Tokyo accordingly. As you know, the Olympics and Paralympics Games will be held in Tokyo in 2020. While you are here, you will be able to see many examples of further development as Tokyo, one of the biggest cities in the world, moves towards hosting these massive events.

We are sure that the IUMI 2017 Tokyo Conference will provide you with opportunities to learn about and discuss the hottest marine insurance issues, and at its close will have been a great success due to the cooperation of our IUMI colleagues from all over the world.

We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo in 2017!
